Coming Up For Air

Watch a movie in your mind with me.

Let's go to a place I hope you never experience in reality. We're going on a COPD Journey.

You're at a pristine clear lake. In the middle of the expanse of it, you've been treading water for a while. You're tired. You feel you can't go on. You can see the shore, you're just not strong enough to reach it, alone.

You begin to panic.

As you continue to tread, your arms start to give out and you sink to the bottom. The weight of the water that surrounds your chest feels heavy and crushing as you hold your breath... literally for dear life.

Stay there on the bottom until you can't take it any longer. You need to come up for air. Finally, you push yourself toward the surface. It feels like it's taking forever, and your chest tightens even more.

Racing for the surface, you can see the light from above, you just can't reach it fast enough. Finally, you emerge from the water. Your lips are the first break the surface. You gasp for air.

Pause the movie.

At this very moment, you are experiencing what a COPD Exacerbation feels like for me. Feel that frightening moment when you can't get enough air in your lungs fast enough. That's me. That's my life. Those are my lungs.

If you have a chronic lung disease, I'm sorry. You alrady know what this feels like.

If you don't you may continue on with your day. It was just a visualization for you to be able to understand a little better what it's like to breathe through damaged lungs.

We are all just a diagnosis away from an entirely different life.
